Newly Naturals- Deep Conditioning Treatment After Big Chop

Hi Beauties

I am introducing a short series called Newly Naturals. I have been getting a lot of messages from newly naturals that would like to know how to care for their hair and what products to use. So this series is for the newly naturals or any naturals that is in need of help. I will try my best to post it once a week or every 2 weeks. If you do have any topics you would like me to talk about please let me know.

Little Disclaimer: I am not a Beautician or am I a natural hair specialist. I will talking about things that I have learner from experience or from research and reading books. You are free to add comments about your experience or research in the comment box.

Big Chop

So you've just done your big chop. You probably transitioned for sometime or went straight for the Big Chop, i just want to congratulate you on your big chop and welcome you to the World of Natural Hair.

At this point it is important to keep your hair moisturised or bring back moisture to your hair. I will encourage you to do a Deep Moisturising Treatment after your big chop. The reason is because after a big chop the hair tends to become very dry and a moisturising teatment will bring the moisture back to the hair. After i had my big chop my hair felt very dry and there was no amount of moisturiser or cream that kept my hair moisturised. What my hair really needed was a deep moisturising conditioning treatment.

Deep Conditioning adds moisture to the hair and helps in retaining the moisture. Deep conditioning treatment helps to condition smoothing the cuticles and giving the hair a smoother and shinier appearance.
Once you’ve done a deep conditioning treatment you will see how smooth and soft your hair feels.

How to Deep Condition

At this stage I will not worry about buying some fancy deep conditioner. Just make it simple because you are still trying to learn about your hair and figure out what your hair likes. You can use products found in your kitchen.

1. Homemade Conditioner
* 11/2 tbsp Regular Conditioner ( Tresemme Naturals, Aussie moist, VO5, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and Yes! to Carrot conditioners)

*1tbsp Olive Oil

It contains a powerful antioxidant that protects the hair follicles from being killed off.Olive Oil can be used on the scalp and hair as well. It conditions, nourishes and improves elasticity of hair.

* 1 tbsp Honey :

This serves as an excellent conditioner. Honey acts as a natural humectant. The high sugar content of honey helps to retain water and thereby maintains moisture content of hair. This helps to keep the cuticle soft. Honey also adds shine and lustre to the hair.

Preparation & Application
Mix all the ingredients together. Apply to wet hair from root to tip or on you TWA. Cover your hair with a plastic cap or conditioning cap for 30 to 45 minutes. Use a steamer or go under the hodded dryer if you can just to apply a little heat to it. Rinse off the conditioner and apply a moisturiser or if your hair is wet you can apply Shea Butter or Olive oil to seal the moisture.

2. Shea Butter Conditioner

All you need is 100% natural shea butter. You can purchase this from most hair shops or online from Sheabutter Cottage
Melt the Shea Butter in the microwave or double boiler and once cooled apply to wet hair. Cover you hair with a Plastic cap for 20 to 30 minutes. You can seat under the dryer or steamer if you can for 15 to 20 minutes and rinse your hair afterwards. You can add carrier oils or essential oils to your shea butter if you want.

This a simple and effective way of conditioning if you are newly natural and you are still learning about your hair or if you've just had your Big Chop and your hair is looking dry.
